Olive, still reeling from last night’s revelations, finds Ethan is grouchy. He does not appreciate that she brought breakfast and asks her if Sophie saw her downstairs alone. After she assures him his fruit is not from a buffet, he remembers Dane dating a woman with a mango tattoo. This shocks Olive when he explains that this was when Ami and Dane were together but in a nonexclusive relationship. Olive hides her emotions as long as possible, but Ethan becomes angry once he realizes she has led him to betray his brother’s confidence. Olive refuses to believe her sister would be non-monogamous. Ethan tells Olive she cannot tell Ami and reveals that Dane said “ not to bother with you, that you were angry all the time’” (227).
Ethan shocks her further by explaining that when they first met, he wanted to ask her for a date. He has no idea what she is talking about when she suggests he acted like her eating habits and body were disgusting. Olive briefly considers that maybe he was right about her negativity but blames Ethan for believing Dane’s version of her. Ethan tries to get her to understand his perspective, but she storms out after agreeing they can now go back to detesting each other.
Olive, alone in the bedroom, wonders what her false first impression of Ethan says about her as a person. She questions whether she really incapable of thinking the best of people and not rushing to anxiety-ridden judgments about them. She wonders whether Ami and Dane were really in an open relationship but recognizes she has to wait until her return to St. Paul to verify this one way or the other. Ethan calls through the door to remind her she cannot betray his confidence, and she tells him to leave her alone but agrees.
Olive wakes up from a nap, still processing the series of revelations. She realizes that their trip and her new understanding of him makes Ethan’s confession of attraction harder to ignore. As Olive wonders if Dane kept her away from Ethan deliberately to obscure his own infidelity, she walks into Ethan as she leaves the room. She tries to ask him if he thinks Dane intended to keep them from talking to each other about his relationship with Ami but apologizes when he reminds her that they cannot resolve this while still in Hawaii.
She pushes him to discuss their relationship instead, despite his reluctance. She tells him that their openness with each other is better than her parents’ stalemate or his surface-relationship with Sophie and that she values it. She asks if he remembers kissing her while drunk. Ethan admits the kiss was spectacular. They kiss again and move toward the bedroom together. Later, they laugh when he goes for condoms, as he admits he never imagined he would need them with her. The scene closes as they resume having sex.
In the next scene, Olive and Ethan are having lunch in the resort dining room. Just as she is playfully asking what is on his mind and he describes how much he enjoyed watching her get dressed to go downstairs, he catches sight of Sophie and Billy. Olive feels insecure next to Sophie’s polished appearance, and her mood sours. She notices Sophie still looks longingly at Ethan. Sophie asks him for a drink to Olive’s horror and anger. Olive reflects that she can understand why Sophie, who seems so conflict avoidant, would reject Ethan’s proposal and move out rather than explain herself. She notes that she never hesitates to address any topic, no matter how challenging.
As they leave, Olive points out that Sophie seems to want Ethan back, which he takes as a triumph. Olive starts to think this means Ethan was only sleeping with her for fun but leaves to go shopping before she can start an argument. On her excursion, Olive reflects on how emotional the day has been, regretting that she cannot call Ami without risking bringing up what she has learned about Dane. She texts her cousin instead, reminded of the family drama that awaits her when she returns. On her return, she and Ethan argue because he cannot understand why she thought he was interested in Sophie or felt neglected. They go to an awkward dinner, and just as Olive is planning to spend the rest of vacation alone, Ethan apologizes. He shows her his phone to prove that he already turned down Sophie’s offer. They order wine and resume joking together.
Dinner continues, and Olive realizes how smitten she is with Ethan now that he is cheerful and relaxed with her. They make plans to see the sunrise the next day from Maui’s highest point, Haleakala. After a passionate night in bed, they rise with the sun to pack for their excursion. Olive recalls that the last time she climbed a mountain she was bitten by a rattlesnake, another example of her bad luck. Ethan points out that she was quickly rescued as someone nearby had the necessary medication to save her life. He suggests that she overemphasizes the idea of luck. He is taken aback when Olive suggests she is also very different from Sophie. Olive tries to avoid the topic by suggesting her assessments are irrelevant if their relationship is not serious. Ethan asks her if being casual is what she wants, and Olive ponders, knowing they will not be able to avoid each other once the vacation ends.
They take a cab to the peak, climb the mountain, and curl up together to watch the sunrise. Ethan gently prods Olive for her answer to his question. Olive brings up Dane again, suggesting they have to consider his ulterior motives in turning them against each other. Ethan says they should let their initial misunderstanding go and that he has always been drawn to her. Olive admits that their “fling” doesn’t feel “flung” (269). She agrees they should stay together after they return home, and they passionately kiss just before the sun comes up. They admit they are both “crazy” about one another (270). Ethan asks a passerby to take their photo, calling Olive his girlfriend, which only intensifies her feeling of infatuation.
The romantic tension between Olive and Ethan reaches its height. By this point the problem is no longer their shared deception or their mutual misunderstanding but fundamental aspects of their personalities. They are both fiercely loyal to their siblings, whose interests may be less shared than their wedded bliss in the novel’s opening would suggest. Because Ethan already struggles with Olive’s distrust and negativity, he cannot accept her interpretation of events. She, on the other hand, is so worried for her sister that his loyalty to Dane only compounds her fears. Both Ethan and Olive have a firm moral compass, pointing in conflicting directions.
Olive’s insecurity about her attractiveness is put to rest relatively quickly when Ethan confesses he has always had intense fantasies about being with her. Sophie’s continued presence, however, brings out her continuing struggles with communication since she almost fights with Ethan rather than give him time to process her negative reaction to his continued engagement with Sophie’s interest.
Ethan, however, quickly proves himself worthy of trust by apologizing and acknowledging the validity of her fears. Olive admits to feeling like the less favored twin, acknowledging her competitive side. She acknowledges that she wants more than a casual relationship limited only to their vacation. Ethan gives her space to share these feelings, gently pushing her to consider that her obsession with luck and fate may be obscuring her view of herself. As their vacation draws to a close, Ethan and Olive are pushing one another to communicate more authentically and take emotional risks. At the same time, Lauren foreshadows that their return home will renew their unresolved conflicts centered around their sibling, Ami and Dane.
