Chapter 12 Summary

Adam goes away for a few days to work on research with Tom. While he’s gone, Olive spends time with her friends, works, and tries to forget about her emotions. Anh and Olive get together for beer and smores, and Anh lays out her plans for the future. Despite all the struggles, she wants to stay in academia and carve out a place for women while Jeremy goes into industry and makes better money. Olive feels both proud and a little jealous that Anh is figuring out her life, which gives her a pang in her stomach “in that spot that seemed to feel Adam’s absence most acutely” (191).

A couple of days later, Adam texts Olive a picture of a pumpkin drink at a coffee shop, which makes her happy until she remembers the lies that she told him. Later, she runs into Holden, who asks if she’s been talking to Adam. When she says they’ve been texting, he nods knowingly and explains how Adam’s gotten much less sullen since they started dating. He’s glad Adam finally asked her out because he’d been “going on and on about this ‘amazing girl’ for years” but never did anything about it (194). Olive can’t believe it’s her and convinces herself Adam must have feelings for someone else. Holden asks Olive about going to Boston and warns her to watch both hers and Adam’s backs around Tom before leaving.

Olive gets an email from an upcoming conference in Boston she’s attending. Her paper was accepted for a panel, where she will give a talk alongside other researchers in her field. Panicking, Olive runs to her advisor’s office, where she says she can’t talk in front of people because she’s terrible at it. Her advisor, Dr. Aslan, talks her down and offers to help, which doesn’t reassure Olive. She leaves and bumps into Malcolm and Anh, who congratulate her on the paper.

Olive asks if they’re going to stay at the conference hotel or rent an Airbnb. Anh and Malcolm inform her they’ve already got accommodations, which shouldn’t be an issue because Olive can just stay with Adam. After Anh leaves, Malcolm offers to help Olive find a place to stay. Olive agrees and goes back to work, angry at the long line of problems she’s caused with her “moronic, harebrained decision to lie to Anh in the first place” (203).

Chapter 13 Summary

A few days later, Olive is trying and failing to find an Airbnb for the conference when Adam arrives. He seems somber, but Olive blabbers awkwardly, which makes him smile. She tells him about needing accommodations for the conference, and Adam offers for her to room with him, explaining there are two beds and that they’d only both be there one night because he has meetings. Olive argues that there will definitely be only one bed, and when Adam looks confused, she concludes he’s “never seen a rom-com or read a romance novel in his life” (209). Adam insists because he doesn’t want her to stay an hour away from the hotel and be traveling late at night, and his concern makes Olive agree.

Olive tells him about her talk and anxiety. His silent acceptance of her anxiety is far more comforting than her advisor’s enthusiasm. He tells her a story about his own brutal grad school mentor. Olive notes the similarities between Adam and his advisor, which makes Adam tense up. Olive changes the subject, and he calms down, offering to look at her presentation slides. Olive asks him to come to her talk. He agrees, and Olive realizes that he’s the first person in a long time who truly feels on her side. She wants more from the relationship, but she doesn’t think there can be more and tells herself “what you have now, it will have to be enough” (217).

Chapters 12-13 Analysis

Lies come to a head and start to cause confusion in these chapters. Olive’s lies leave her in the position of needing a place to stay for the conference, which has both benefits and cons. On the positive side, staying with Adam leads to them finally coming together at the story’s end. If she never lied to Anh, Olive may have never even talked to Adam, let alone gotten into a relationship (real or fake) with him. On the negative side, her lies cause a lot of strife in a short time. Discussing her insecurities and feelings could have helped avoid all the confusion, but she’s too afraid of the truth to do that.

Adam and Dr. Aslan have very different reactions to Olive’s upcoming talk at the conference. Dr. Aslan is excited and supportive, which makes Olive more anxious. The expectation for Olive to do well makes Olive feel more pressured to be perfect. By contrast, Adam accepts Olive’s fear and doesn’t try to convince her everything will be fine. His understanding makes Olive feel less alone and more like people will accept her if she makes a mistake. Olive’s differing reactions show how overwhelming and at times, toxic, positivity can cause stress while quiet understanding helps to promote the feeling that everyone doesn’t need to be satisfied.

These chapters foreshadow events at the conference. Olive’s observation that there will be one bed ends up being false, but it foreshadows how she and Adam make use of only one bed. Holden’s warnings about Tom reflect Tom’s hidden abusive behavior and how he treats Olive after her talk. Anh’s discussion of the future shows how there is life after grad school, even if Anh and Olive feel overwhelmed by their degree programs now. Olive missing Adam shows she’s thinking of him in the long-term of her life, much like how Anh considers Jeremy.
